When you think about what U.S. states are the most eco-friendly, which ones come to mind first? Perhaps a sunny state like California? Or maybe a state like South Dakota, which is widely known for its wind turbines? Chances are you’re overlooking a handful of other states that have risen up as leaders in the green movement and thus also in the green jobs arena. Here’s a look at three green states in particular that aren’t high on many people’s radar but should be.
This state, known for being a paradise destination, generates
more than 14% of its energy from renewable energy sources. In addition, nearly
16% of its employees work in the green industry. The reason why the Aloha State
stands out among the 50 states is that the government’s aim is to make all of
its energy come from renewable energy sources by the year 2045. Some days, the
state already has days when about 60% of its electricity comes renewable
What makes this state stand apart from the competition is
that it has among the most eco-friendly job markets nationwide. Over one-fifth
of workers in the state work in the green industry. In addition, nearly a
quarter of the state’s workers commute using green means, such as walking or
biking – a much bigger share compared with most states. The state’s air is also
a lot like Hawaii’s – clean with a relatively low concentration of particulate
matter than can be harmful.
This state back in 2015 became the very first one to establish a law regarding renewable energy. According to this standard, three-quarters of electricity in the retail sector must come from renewable energy sources by the year 2032. Vermont just so happens to be the sole state where just about all electricity stems from renewable energy sources – especially hydroelectric and solar power.
