To switch things up a bit for a change, we’re switching our focus today from green jobs in the U.S. to a bit of exciting news from across the pond — news that very well could impact workout enthusisasts here at home.
A gym, called Terra Hale, in London opens this April to much fanfare, as it is the first eco-friendly, human-powered workout facility. This means that when gym-goers run the treadmill or ride a bike, they are quite literally powering the facility.
As activewear sourced from recycled material becomes more popular, so too is workout equipment like yoga mats and water bottles. Terra Hale is taking things a step further by making sure it not only helps reduce waste, but also gives back and helps it’s neighbors. This means that if people work hard enough in the gym, the extra energy goes back into the grid to help neighboring buildings.
Terra Hale, which means “strong earth,” incorporates its mission into every part of the gym. Everything in the gym comes from recycled materials, from yoga mats to door handles to the floor, and even utilizing reclaimed 1920s railway clocks. The gym features walls covered in ivy that help to filter the air. And anyone who enters with a plastic water bottle will have it confiscated and replaced with a stainless steel bottle.
Beyond helping people meet their personal fitness goals, those who take a spin class will even learn how much energy they helped contribute at the end of the class. At Terra Hale, your workout sessions will be measured not just in calories, but in watts.
As the world takes a more sustainable approach to their everyday lives and even their workout facilities, perhaps green jobs will become more prevalent everywhere in the years to come. Stay tuned to the blog to see what industry goes green next.
